Mediabistro parties
48My ex-husband, myself and Bob Brown of Network World news editor
When I was a full time freelance writer, I would hob nob with many other writers, editors and other people in the writing field. One way to do this is to join mediabistro.com. It is free to join. Mediabistro.com not only has media parties, they offer courses, job board, Avantguild (a yearly fee to access other places on the site, offer you discounts and health insurance and much more.
I, on several, occasion would travel to Boston, MA (they have many media parties around the USA) to attend one of these fun media parties. I have included a picture of my ex-husband, myself and Bob Brown of Network World news editor. (Please excuse me, I have since lost weight.)
These parties allowed a form of networking on a casual basis. There is not conference, other structured class or seminar to deal with. You are introducing yourself to many people that you may not otherwise get a chance to meet face to face. I had met a fellow writer, by accident, that I had only been conversing on the Internet and had never met her fact to face. I did not even know she was going to be there. She was on a book tour and was going to be in Boston on that Friday night, she wanted a night to relax.
I also had become a good acquaintance of Bob for a short time as I did not have anything to write for his publication, but he was thinking about publishing, I was able to give him so worthy advice on the subject. Never rule anything out. Try going to these parties, I am going to guarentee that they will be worth the trip.
